About the Professional Development System
As part of its administrative duties for the General Commission for Professional Development (CGAP), the Department of Professional Training is responsible for coordinating the evaluation of CFIA members to verify that their professional competencies remain up to date, in accordance with the criteria and procedures established in the relevant regulations.
The Professional Continuing Education System is a voluntary evaluation process that determines whether an engineering or architecture professional registered with the CFIA has completed a valid program of continuing education, professional development, and professional experience, thereby demonstrating that they possess the up-to-date competencies required for professional practice in their field of expertise.
Professional updating is general in nature and focuses on the engineering or architecture discipline in which the member being evaluated is incorporated.
Objective
To assure the national and international community that members of the CFIA who have achieved “professional development” status possess up-to-date professional competencies for relevant professional practice in their field of expertise.
- It provides engineering and architecture professionals with the opportunity to demonstrate to and assure society that they are up to date in their respective fields of professional expertise.
- Contributes to promoting the socioeconomic well-being of professionals affiliated with the CFIA.
- It gives CFIA member engineering and architecture professionals public recognition that contributes to their professional competitiveness.
- It helps prevent problems arising from professional obsolescence.
- Before making the certification payment, we recommend that you send us all the necessary documentation so we can conduct a preliminary evaluation. This review will allow us to confirm whether you meet the necessary requirements to move forward with the process, or if any corrections need to be made to the documents you submit. Once this initial review is complete, we will inform you of the feasibility of continuing with the certification process, ensuring that your investment is not wasted.
- Once you have corrected the issues that were pointed out, you can pay the required fee and formally submit your application.
- The Department of Vocational Training forwards the application to the appropriate committee based on the field of study (CIC, CACR, CIEMI, CIT, CITEC).
- The relevant committee will have one month to issue its opinion on the application and communicate it to the Department of Vocational Training. If the committee determines that additional information is needed to make a decision, the professional will be notified so that he or she may submit it.
- Once the requested corrections have been made, the relevant committee forwards the resolution to the General Committee on Professional Development for approval.
- The General Commission on Professional Development reviews and endorses the recommendations issued by the respective committee. Finally, the Commission submits the recommendations to the CFIA’s General Board of Directors for ratification. The General Board of Directors issues a resolution, which establishes the start of the certification period for the next five years.
- The Department of Vocational Training will oversee the publication of the professional's information on the official list on the CFIA website and will issue their certificate, which will be sent to their email address.
