What does Absent Member status entail?

An Absent Member is defined as a Member or Associate who is absent from the country and who formally and promptly notifies the CFIA of this fact.

Important

Absent Member status does not refer to voluntary retirement; therefore, during the approved period, the corresponding Mutual Aid fee must continue to be paid.

Please note that:

  • The application for absent membership will not become effective until it is approved by the General Board of Directors, which will notify you of the corresponding decision.
  • During the approved period of absence, you must cancel only the corresponding mutual insurance fee, within the established deadlines. Otherwise, a 25% penalty will be charged. This applies provided that the period of absence exceeds 12 months; otherwise, the total tuition fees will be canceled.
  • At the end of the period of absence granted, the CFIA will automatically remove this status. If the professional enters the country before the end of the period granted, they must notify the CFIA's Registration and Documentation Department in writing so that the appropriate steps can be taken. To do so, they must be up to date with their membership fees for the month in which they submit the request to lift the status.
