How do I request an academic degree update?
- Please send the documents listed below to the Department of Vocational Training (DFP) at formacion.profesional@cfia.cr
- In order to determine whether an update is warranted, the Department of Professional Training conducts an analysis of the alignment between the applicant’s university degree and the professional profile of the engineering or architecture field in which they are employed.
- The application is then forwarded to the Department of Registration and Documentation to verify the degree with the relevant institution, enter the information into the database, and add it to the student’s academic record.
- The Department of Registration and Documentation will verify the degree with CONESUP or the respective university, as applicable. Therefore, we request that you sign and submit the authorization form for the verification of this information. This verification process may take a few days, pending a response from the relevant institution.
1. A clear and legible copy of the academic degree
- The photocopy must include all the information from the document; make sure none of it is cut off.
- In the case of degrees issued by foreign universities, they must bear the consular seals and the seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, as provided for in Article 67 of the Consular Service Act No. 46 of junio 7 junio , or be duly apostilled in accordance with the provisions of Law 8923; and a copy of the certification of recognition and equivalence must be submitted.
- All documentation provided must be submitted in Spanish; otherwise, an officially certified translation must be submitted.
- It is important to note that in order for the Department of Professional Education to review a request for academic degree recognition, the applicant must have at least an equivalent academic degree.
- The process of recognizing and equating academic credentials must be completed through the National Council of University Presidents (CONARE) prior to filing with the CFIA. For more information:

- In special cases where the information is not displayed properly, you will be asked to submit it via the Services Platform at the CFIA headquarters or at any of its regional offices.
